These annual awards give recognition to appropriate developments in our area,
and are presented at our AGM, usually held in late October/ early November.
There we display relevant photographs together with the citations.
We are concerned only with those aspects of a development that enhance amenity for the general public. Thus the awards may recognise good facades, walls, or gardens, but do not refer to interiors. If there are any local developments, repairs, renovations etc. (however major, however minor) that you think deserve such an award, please telephone or write to Gill Penrose or any member of the Committee (See Contacts page).
Likewise if you come across any particularly deplorable development in our area, please let us know; we may bring forward to the AGM a candidate for the Wooden Spoon award, and ask for a vote there on whether it should be ‘awarded’.
All nominations for Gold Star or Wooden Spoon awards are carefully considered. We normally make four awards, and several interested members of the Society usually join members of the Committee to participate in the selection procedure. This "walkabout" to view all the nominations takes place in August, and recommendations are taken to a vote at the September meeting of the Committee.
2009 GOOD THINGS : BAD THINGS
|
Our 'visual
amenity' depends to a great extent on the many relatively small
things we see and experience every day in our area. We invite
members to to send us pictures illustrating their choice of 'good'
and 'bad'. This could include for example, a nicely restored stone
gateway (see example) or a
beautifully maintained tree. On the bad side, an intrusive dormer
window or persistent abuse
of the refuse system. (see example)
These need not
be new events - just things that are nice to see or the opposite. We
need a digital photograph plus a few words to explain your choice.
We plan to display these at the AGM and possibly use in the
Newsletter. (Please say if you do not want your name shown.)
We look forward
to seeing your contributions! Please
send these to Simon Birch at
simon.birch7@btinternet.com
by October 21st.
