MARIE CURIE
CANCER CARE

60th ANNIVERSARY
CHARITY CONCERT
March 29th

The concert was given by the Stilig String Quartet: Emil Huckle-Kleve and Naomi Hale, violins; Thomas Wraith, 'cello; and Will Drakett, viola and piano; with Rebecca Hutter, soprano.

It was a varied, challenging and interesting programme, and it was also the last concert to be presented by Peter Scott in the beautiful setting of Redland Church. Several very good reasons to attract an audience on what turned out to be a tempestuous night.

However, one of the quartet members was not available to play that evening and the programme had to be hurriedly changed. Great credit must go to whoever devised the new programme and to the two performers, Rebecca Hutter and Will Drakett, who sang and played for us at such short notice.

We enjoyed works by a variety of composers including Haydn, Elgar, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky and the evening ended with the quartet playing the lively Fascinating Rhythm by Gershwin. The concert was a musical delight from beginning to end, and all who took part performed with great skill, musicality and verve. This was all the more impressive when one realised how young the performers were. They are indeed a talented and dedicated group of young musicians.

Before the concert began, nurse Catherine LeRoy told us about the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care, who look after the terminally ill in their own homes.
She spoke with quiet conviction, and was available to talk further to people in the interval, held in the Church Hall, where refreshments were provided. This was a very pleasant and social occasion which raised £572 for the cause.
Peter Scott has presented concerts in Redland Church over the past seven years; this concert was his tenth and final one. They have been greatly enjoyed by members, and have raised significant sums of money for charity. His kindly welcome to us all and his introduction of the performers creates a relaxed and genial atmosphere. These concerts have provided both a platform and an opportunity to perform, and have provided support and encouragement especially for young musicians. We are most appreciative of Peter’s time and effort in presenting this most successful series of concerts.

Warmest congratulations to all the young musicians for giving us such a superb evening. We hardly noticed the torrential rain as we hurried home, so elated were we by their fine musical performance.
